History surrounds you as you travel through Appalachian Ohio. Buffington Island in Meigs County, site of the only major Civil War battle in Ohio, Marietta’s beautiful downtown district in Washington County and Serpent Mound in Adams County all make for a fascinating, historic environment.

Looking for an intellectual or artistic pursuit? Look no further than Appalachian Ohio’s diverse set of museums. Come see beautiful, locally created art exhibits or learn about our region’s fascinating history. Despite boasting a major city, Appalachian Ohio is home to some of the best, nationally acclaimed fine arts in Ohio. Examples include: Stuart’s Opera House, The Dairy Barn and the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts

Parks, Forests and Outdoor Activities

Appalachian Ohio has 33 state parks, 21 state forests, 11 state nature preserves, one national park, one national forest and some of the country’s most beautiful land. Whether you prefer to camp, hike, hunt or fish you will find wonderful facilities and services to support your outdoor pursuits. The region also provides terrific opportunities to cycle, boat and ride horses or all terrain vehicles.

Unique Stores

Even the most selective shoppers discover unique buys in Appalachian Ohio. The area is known internationally for its quality baskets, pottery, quilts and dolls. People travel from near and far to purchase furniture, foods and handcrafts from the large local Amish communities, but that’s not all you’ll find. Mandolins, customized stained glass and handcrafted cedar gazebos are just a small sampling of the unique products being produced and sold in the region.
