HIGHWAYS

Location is everything and Ohio is 600 miles, or a day's drive, from 60 percent of the U.S. population, 80 percent of the U.S. corporate headquarters and 61 percent of U.S. manufacturing capacity.

Ohio has the fourth largest Interstate highway system of any state.

As evidenced in the map to the left, Ohio has made major progress on the 30-year old Appalachian Development Highway System. Of the original 201.5 authorized miles, 161.4 are open to traffic, 6.9 are under construction and 33.2 miles remain to be constructed.

Major highway construction projects in Appalachian Ohio will provide a direct link to Interstate 77 in West Virginia, and will make U.S. 33 the most direct route between the two state capitals, Columbus and Charleston and all points south. The U.S. 33 Corridor project is one of several significant improvement projects funded by the Ohio Department Of Transportation. Other upgrades include the repairs and improvements to U.S. 50 in Athens, State Route 7 in Lawrence County, U.S. 35 in Ross County and U.S. 23 in Scioto County. Since 1996, ODOT has invested more than $380 million into southeastern Ohio 's roadway system.
